"Burton
studied racing at 'Hedgecock U.'"

Daytona notebook:
Jeff Burton achieved his basic racing knowledge in High
Point.
"I attended the Jay Hedgecock University of Racing,"
the South Boston, Va., native said this week.
Hedgecock, a former track champion at Caraway Speedway,
operates his own race shop in High Point, building cars
and chassis for several area drivers who run weekly
events. Occasionally, he still races.
"Seriously, I received some of my best racing education
working with Jay," Burton said. "I worked
there about a year. Bobby Labonte and I worked there
at the same time. It was a good experience for both
of us."
Burton, 1994 Winston Cup Rookie of the Year, starts
the Stavola Brothers Ford 32nd in today's 400.
"At the time, Jay built about all the cars for
Sam Ard," Burton said. "Jay knows what he's
doing. Nobody builds a better race car. I helped build
those cars for Ard, and I learned an awful lot about
chassis and what works and what doesn't."
"I guess it's fair to say I received my formal
education at Jay Hedgecock University."
